Gift Acceptance Policy

Darrowby Farm Sanctuary (DFS) solicits and accepts charitable donations for the purposes of supporting and advancing its programs and services and consistent with its mission. Donations in the form of cash, checks, and credit cards are easily accepted. We request a conversation before contributing other types of charitable support. DFS provides donors proper acknowledgment for all gifts.

Donations are generally accepted from individuals, families, estates, partnerships, corporations, businesses, foundations, trusts, and government agencies.

Donation Acceptance Considerations: DFS considers the following factors when considering acceptance of special or purpose restricted donations:

  • Potential compromise to any aspect of DFS
  • Incompatibility between gift intention and the organization’s use of the gift
  • Potential for negative impact to DFS’s public relationships, public image, or reputation
  • Compromised beneficiary advantage between DFS and the donor
  • Consistency with similar donations previously accepted by DFS
  • Form of gift and whether DFS will incur any expense upon acceptance or use of the donation
  • Effect on future giving and whether the gift will encourage or discourage future giving by this or other donors

In-kind Items: Donations such as food, bedding, office supplies, etc., will be accepted provided that:

  • Items are in usable condition
  • DFS has a need for the items

DFS has limited storage space. Items not needed by DFS may be accepted and shared with other sanctuaries or shelters that can use them.

In-kind Services: DFS accepts service donations that help further its overall mission, programs, and projects with the following considerations:

  • Service meets the DFS Donation Acceptance Considerations outlined above
  • Services meet the quality program or project requirements
  • Services meet the timeline of the program or project
  • Donor is reputable and can safely deliver services as requested

DFS provides a receipt for donations of in-kind services but will not identify a value. In accordance with applicable laws, it is the donor’s responsibility to determine and assign a value.

Securities: DFS accepts donations of securities actively traded in the United States to include stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. Accepted securities may be liquidated upon receipt.

Real estate, art, and other items: Donations of real estate, art, and other non-cash items may be accepted upon approval of the DFS Board of Directors.

Designated gifts: DFS uses donations as agreed upon between the Donor and DFS. In cases of questions or leftover resources, DFS will consult with the donor to determine the donation’s proper use or return of those resources.

Donation decisions: Decisions to accept or decline donations are the responsibility of the DFS Board of Directors in consultation with its Executive Director. When necessary, DFS will seek legal counsel before accepting a special donation.

DFS will not accept gifts that could:

  • Violate its corporate charter
  • Result in losing its 501(c)(3) status
  • Negatively impact its public image or reputation
  • Be too costly to accept or administer
  • Result in any unacceptable consequences for DFS
