Lucy and her brother Mr. Tumnus came to us with Emily Bronte Donkey in January 2022 after their owner could no longer care for them. They had been in need of care for awhile, and Lucy was severely underweight and suffering from parasites. She needed a trip to Tufts to save her life and to get her rumen in working order again. Once she regained her health, Lucy’s personality shone. Lucy is our effervescent explorer, who skips here and there, challenged her brother to head-butting games, and likes to be neck-deep in the hay when it’s served.
Mr. Tumnus was a gentle and loving spirit, full of calmness and wisdom. On Christmas 2022 we learned that he had a large thymoma, or chest tumor, and we had two months of beautiful time with him. In extremely cold weather he and Lucy slept in our kitchen by the fire, and he loved nothing more than to stand nose to nose with us, being stroked and brushed and talked to. We miss him terribly, and Lucy had a hard winter mourning his loss. We did our best to introduce her to the PG4, but she had no interest in them. She even stopped eating. But the day we released her into the steer pasture, she gobbled up hay all day and has not stopped. She loves her steers and needs to be near them. Despite the difference in their species and size, they are true family.
